Norfin can’t stop strangers from being kind.
Over the weekend, beachgoers jumped into action to help save the life of a great white shark that washed up on the shores of Nantucket.
The heart-pounding video shows the rescue of a lifetime that began when Lisa Phillips spotted the vulnerable maneater thrashing about on the shallow shoreline of Low Beach in Siasconesett.
The poor shark was repeatedly battered by waves and swept into shallower waters, at times becoming trapped sideways with its fins stuck in the sand.
“It was so helpless I thought it would bounce back, but it just washed up,” Phillips said. He told the Nantucket Current.
“We said we have to step up and try to help. It definitely got the adrenaline going. One of our guests took off his shirt and walked in and said I’m going too.”
Phillips and his friend Ted Locke bravely entered the water and pushed the giant fish, which appeared to be struggling and bloody, off the beach.
They deliberately pushed the beast away from their lower bodies to avoid being bitten, but their efforts only got the great white shark so far.
Phillips then bravely went deeper into the water, submerging most of his body and leaving himself vulnerable, allowing the shark to make one final powerful leap.
The push worked, and the maneater flew off into the deeper waters.
“Touching a great white shark? That’s an incredible thing to put on your bucket list,” she said.
The rescue seemed like fate, as the family decided to make a rare visit to Low Beach that afternoon before catching a flight back to California.
The family owns a home in Siasconset but typically heads to the beaches on the south shore during their stay, and before the trip was over, they made a last-minute change and decided to show their guests around the area.
