Gen Z’s Moviegoing Habits Surpass Previous Generations

A recent study indicates that Gen Z is eclipsing earlier generations by attending more movies each year, marking them as enthusiastic moviegoers.

A new report from Fandango reveals that Gen Z is returning to theaters in droves, eagerly purchasing both discounted tickets and premium IMAX options as they bounce back from the pandemic.

Fandango conducted a survey involving 7,000 adults, of whom 5,091 identified as movie enthusiasts or had seen at least one film in the past year. The results showed that 87% of Gen Z and 82% of Millennials have visited a theater at least once in the last year, while only 70% of Gen X and 58% of Baby Boomers did the same.

Gen Z and Millennials are going to the movies more often too, with both groups averaging about seven visits a year, outpacing Gen X (6.1) and Baby Boomers (5.7).

Interestingly, Millennials often cite a desire to escape daily life as their reason for attending, while Gen Z is more focused on the social and communal aspects of the experience.

Gen Z also attributes their interest to a wider variety of films and the overall appeal of going out. In contrast, the specific reasons remain less clear for older generations.

Jeramie Heinlein, Fandango’s executive vice president, highlighted that this trend challenges the notion that Gen Z is socially withdrawn, framing their moviegoing experience as a chance to connect rather than purely as an escape.

“There’s been a belief that Gen Z isn’t engaging much with theaters, but our findings indicate they are on the rise,” Heinlein stated. “It’s particularly significant to see how much they value the shared nature of the experience, reinforcing the theater’s role as a social venue for younger viewers.”

Heinlein urged film studios and cinemas to closely monitor the ticket-buying preferences of Millennials and Gen Z if they want to thrive moving forward.

“As the landscape of moviegoing shifts, understanding these intergenerational dynamics is vital for future growth,” he explained. “Gen Z and Millennials are changing the moviegoing experience by focusing on premium offerings, social connections, and innovative content. Adapting to their preferences isn’t just beneficial—it’s crucial for the industry’s future.”
