Concerns Rise Over Sanctuary Policies in New York City Ahead of Mayoral Election
As the mayoral election in New York City approaches, socialist candidate Zoran Mamdani is reportedly favored to win, prompting complaints from residents about the impacts of sanctuary policies on their neighborhoods.
A recent investigative video from American Border Stories highlights New Yorkers’ worries regarding a rise in organized crime correlating with the city’s immigrant shelters and asylum policies. One local voiced frustration, placing blame on the progressive Democratic City Council, stating, “This is the worst City Council I’ve ever seen in New York City,” according to local organizer Renee Collymore.
Polls indicate that Mamdani holds a significant lead over his competitors in the race for mayor.
Collymore expressed her belief that the current council’s progressive stance is a barrier to effective governance, explaining, “When you have a one-sided Congress, you can’t get the job done because they believe that centrist Democrats, like me, are in the way of progress.”
“You know there’s gang activity, and nothing is being done—that’s shameful,” she added. Collymore called for the Sanctuary City Act to be overturned, arguing that lawmakers treat immigrants like children, adding that moderates are unfairly labeled as anti-immigrant.
She pointed to increased crime, including sex trafficking, since the establishment of immigrant shelters, leaving parents feeling unsafe in public spaces. “It wasn’t a joke,” she said, referencing recent violence in her community.
Another resident criticized former President Biden’s policies, explaining that his decisions allowed many individuals from various countries to enter without sufficient background checks, a move he deemed problematic.
Dino, a pizzeria owner and immigrant, described the challenges stemming from the influx of newcomers. He remarked that while sanctuary policies might look effective on paper, they fail in real-world applications. “Employees are scared to walk home at night, and customers are staying away,” he lamented, urging city leaders to prioritize public safety over political agendas.
Leroy Johnson, an independent journalist, echoed concerns about gang recruitment among immigrants, suggesting that some may come with intentions to cause trouble. “They know nothing will happen to them,” he noted, highlighting the dangers posed to the local community.
New York City has recently closed several immigrant shelters, including the controversial Roosevelt Hotel, which had become associated with gang-related violence. The upcoming mayoral election is set for November 4th, with Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, currently enjoying a double-digit lead over his opponents.
Mamdani has stated his intention to oppose the previous administration’s immigration policies, asserting that he would work to protect residents from deportation actions by ICE. Nicole Kyprilov, Executive Director of TABS, commented that the issues unfolding in New York stem from failed border policies, causing fear and rapid changes in communities. “This crisis is no longer contained at our borders; it’s right on America’s doorstep,” she said.
