Community Concerns Over Safe Injection Site in East Harlem
Residents of East Harlem are expressing frustration regarding behaviors observed around the OnPoint safe injection site, which is funded by taxpayer dollars. Reports indicate that users have been engaging in socially disruptive actions, such as public sex and other inappropriate behaviors.
One resident recounted a shocking experience when he witnessed a sexual encounter happening in broad daylight. He described how a man seemed completely unbothered, casually strolling away after the act while a woman hurriedly pulled up her pants, leaving onlookers bewildered.
This site, operational since 2021, provides clean supplies for drug use, including needles and pipes. Proponents of this “harm reduction” approach argue it aims to protect chronic users by creating a safer environment. However, detractors suggest that such measures merely enable addiction rather than addressing the root issues.
OnPoint claims to have prevented over 1,800 overdoses since opening, and their annual budget has surged to $17.4 million. City data indicates that nearly 6,000 users engaged in drug use at the site 38,000 times last year alone. The facility operates in a legal gray area; while city regulations permit it, state and federal laws do not.
Local residents, like 69-year-old Schkigare Baker, express confusion and dismay about the situation. Baker described instances of lewd behavior, including defecation near cars, contributing to a sense of chaos in the community.
Another resident shared a memorable incident where she felt as though she was witnessing a “porn show” when a couple engaged in sexual acts directly outside her home. She said, “They don’t care, it’s just terrible,” echoing sentiments shared by her family members.
As discontent grows among East Harlem residents, questions remain about the efficacy and morality of such facilities. The Trump administration is reportedly investigating the site, hinting at potential legal action.
OnPoint NYC has yet to respond to inquiries seeking comment.
