Resistance to DEI Among Workers Grows

Surveys show that U.S. workers' opinions on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts have worsened over the past year.

According to a Pew Research study, the percentage of American workers who believe The number of people who think DEI is a “good thing” dropped from 56 percent in February 2023 to 52 percent in October 2024. 21 percent of U.S. workers believe DEI is a “bad thing,” an increase of 5 percent from February 2023.

Another Pew Research poll found that 36% of Americans believe DEI harms white men, and 14% say DEI helps white men. A growing number of Americans believe that DEI practices help Black, Hispanic, and Asian men and women, as well as white women.

Pew Research writes that the question of whether DEI is useful applies to political and ethnic issues:

As in the case of 2023women, Democrats, and Black, Hispanic, and Asian workers are among the groups most likely to say focusing on increasing DEI in the workplace is a good thing.

Republicans and men continue to be among the worker groups most likely to view DEI initiatives as a bad thing, and their views have become more negative over the past year.

42% of Republicans and Republican-leaning workers think DEI is a bad thing, up from 30% in 2023.

Additionally, U.S. workers believe their companies pay a great deal of attention to DEI (19%), an increase of 4% since February 2023.
