Responses of 5 Evangelical Leaders to U.S. Actions in Venezuela

The recent U.S. military actions in Venezuela were met with approval from several evangelical leaders, who viewed it as a necessary move against oppression and corruption.

Over the weekend, U.S. forces conducted swift operations, targeting strategic locations and capturing President Nicolás Maduro along with his wife, Syria Flores. They have been sent to the U.S. over allegations of drug trafficking and narco-terrorism.

Here’s how five American evangelical figures responded:

Franklin Graham, President of Samaritan’s Purse

“Thank you, President Trump, for supporting the people of Venezuela,” Graham shared on social media. “The President is making strategic efforts to protect our country and improve lives globally. He mentioned in an interview that illegal drug imports into the U.S. have decreased by 97%. Incredible news! This reduction follows a painful history where we lost 300,000 lives annually to drugs. We are trying to address this tragedy and prevent our nation from suffering the same fate as these countries ravaged by socialism and corruption.” Over many years, Graham noted, his organization has collaborated with over 4,500 Venezuelan churches sharing the message of hope. “Please keep them in your prayers.”

L. Gilberto Corredera, Pastor, Prestonwood, Texas

“As a pastor with a predominantly Venezuelan and Hispanic congregation, I speak from experience. I know the pain and stories of those who carry sadness yet a quiet strength. For many in Venezuela, this situation feels personal—a mix of grief, separation from their homeland, but also a flicker of hope for justice. Instead of anger or revenge, Christians are encouraged to pray and remain humble. We hope for a smooth transition of leadership in Venezuela, with a focus on peace and restoration.” Corredera expressed gratitude towards the U.S. military and its leaders, wishing for their protection and for wisdom in decision-making. “To the Venezuelan community, your suffering is understood, and your faith is not in vain. God bless Venezuela and the U.S.”

Samuel Rodriguez, President of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference

Rodriguez voiced optimism for the Venezuelan people, declaring this a significant and hopeful moment. He emphasized that the demise of oppressive regimes contradicts God’s design for freedom. “Dictatorships might silence voices temporarily, but they can’t extinguish the inherent desire for dignity and opportunity. The Venezuelans have not just endured; they are poised to thrive.” He praised the Trump administration for its ethical stance in advocating for freedom across the Western Hemisphere. “This moment illustrates that authoritarianism is giving way to a renewed commitment to freedom and responsibility.”

Daniel R. Soule, President of the American Rights Center

Soule shared his thoughts about waking up to the news of Maduro’s capture. “What a remarkable day! Tea was being poured, and the consensus was that it was a great move. Questions about legality arise, but many believe it was a sound decision.” He noted parallels with past U.S. military endeavors, like the capture of Manuel Noriega, indicating this action rests firmly within established legal frameworks.

Albert Mohler, President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Mohler raised concerns about the aftermath of Maduro’s removal, asserting it was a justified move. He noted that the current international landscape is messy and filled with challenges, highlighting the necessity for decisive action rather than waiting for congressional deliberations. “The world is chaotic, and while some may criticize American actions, the reality is that if the U.N. had been effective, intervention would have been unnecessary. While today’s actions are contentious, they are essential.”
