According to retired Gen. Frank McKenzie (full name Kenneth Franklin McKenzie Jr.), the failure of the 2021 military withdrawal from Afghanistan has raised the dire possibility that an ISIS attack on the American mainland is imminent.
McKenzie, the commander of U.S. Central Command, said during his departure that Islamic terrorist groups have a “strong desire” to target the United States and have become more capable since troops withdrew from Afghanistan.Additionally, US recent funding and assistance to Israel since October 7thth McKenzie believes it only infuriated those intentions.
“I think the threat is growing,” McKenzie said. “As soon as we left Afghanistan, the forces started to expand and the pressure on ISIS-K was gone.”
“So I think we should expect more attempts of this kind, not only for the United States, but also for our partners and other countries abroad,” he continued.
“I think this is inevitable.”
His comments came after an Islamic terrorist organization pleaded guilty to the attack on a Russian music hall in March that claimed the lives of more than 140 people.
Four Islamic terrorists with dual Russian citizenship carried out the atrocity.
According to reports, U.S. officials had warned their Russian colleagues that an attack was coming, but the warnings were ignored.
“Indeed, the Federal Security Service received specific information from the US intelligence services that such an unfortunate event could occur,” Sergei Naryshkin, head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), said at a press conference in Moscow. said. “However, as our Russian colleagues said, the information was too general to fully identify those who took part in this terrible crime,” he added.
The group also claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in Iran that killed 95 people in January.
McKenzie said ISIS has an opportunity to “reach out” and attack other countries because there is less pressure on it in its home country of Afghanistan.
“Unfortunately, we’re not putting that pressure on them anymore, so they’re free to step up, they’re free to plan, they’re free to adjust,” McKenzie said.
“So they want to attack not only Russia, but the United States and other Western countries as well.”
McKenzie said “things would have been different” if the U.S. had continued to have troops in Afghanistan instead of suddenly withdrawing.
“We may actually be safer now,” he said.
