Marine One Helicopter Finds New Purpose with Secret Service

The decommissioned Marine One helicopter has a new assignment at the Secret Service in the U.S. In a recent video shared on X, Troy Salia, an assistant agent with the Secret Service, announced that the Sikorsky VH-3D, a well-known aircraft, is now being utilized for training special agents at the Raleigh Training Center in Maryland.

For half a century, Marine One has been the aircraft of choice for U.S. presidents and vice presidents. It’s interesting to think about how this helicopter has played such a significant role in history.

Deputy Chief Mike Jazzwicky talked about their collaboration with the Presidential Helicopter Program to acquire this new aircraft. Working alongside current commander Alex Ramthun and Chief Maintenance Officer Matt Cooper, they’ve ensured that this aircraft will serve various training purposes. It’s fascinating, really, how a retired helicopter can still contribute in such meaningful ways.

Located at the Southern Lawn of the White House, Marine One is said to have specific security features meant to protect leaders, including enhanced weight capacity and extended flying range without needing to refuel, as previously noted.

Salia emphasized that having access to this helicopter allows agents responsible for presidential details to engage in hands-on training that simulates real-life scenarios. This change is particularly important for enhancing their skillsets, as it provides a more realistic training experience.

“We can provide better protective training to our basic special agent classes,” Salia added, indicating a forward step in improving training programs at the Raleigh Training Center. It’s clear that integrating this iconic helicopter into training practices is a significant move for the Secret Service.
