Retired Military Leaders Slam Tim Walz for Dodging Iraq Deployment

In television interviews, veteran leaders who served in the Minnesota National Guard with Democratic vice presidential nominee Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.) criticized Walz for leaving the military knowing his troops would be deployed to Iraq. The Megyn Kelly Show It aired on Monday.

Army Command Sergeant Major Paul Hare (retired) said Waltz's departure from the unit was “morally indefensible.”

Harr explained that at the time, Waltz was the battalion's senior NCO leader and his job was to prepare his Soldiers for deployment to Iraq.

“We NCOs… people [have] “We understand our role in the military: to use all the assets at hand to motivate, educate and train our soldiers to perform to the best of their abilities, when the time comes, and to have our commissioned officers carry out the orders of the President of the United States and the commissioned officers above them,” Herr said.

“In the First World War, during trench warfare, officers would blow a whistle to get out of the trench and charge the enemy. The NCO's job is to motivate them as much as they can to get out of the trenches and I intend to be the tip of that spear,” he added.

Herr said it would have been “demoralizing” if he had told his soldiers, “I'm not going in today. I'm not going in. You go ahead.”

“It's undermining the structure of the military and its ability to carry out its mission. It may be legally wrong, but [but] It's morally indefensible,” Herr said.

Walz's supporters argue that he retired from the National Guard in May 2005, two months before his unit was officially notified of the upcoming deployment, but retired leaders say that as a senior NCO leader, he likely would have known about the deployment months before.

In fact, in March 2005, Waltz put out In a statement about the unit's possible future deployments, the colonel said, “As command sergeant major, I am responsible not only for ensuring that my unit is ready to deploy to Iraq, but also to deploy if called upon. Whether in Washington, D.C. or in Iraq, I will serve my country to the best of my ability.”

Harr said he and other senior NCOs could have retired like Waltz.

“We didn't. There were soldiers whose lives were completely restricted by this. They were deployed to defend their country,” he said. “I'm not going to let my soldiers go forward without me. I trained them. I'm with them. I'm going to endure every hardship they go through. That's my position.” [Walz] That's the situation he was in. And he walked away. He didn't care, he didn't care. It was all about him.”
