Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Reflects on Preseason Opener
Green Bay, whisk. – Aaron Glenn is hoping his first preseason as head coach of the Jets turns out better than his debut as a player.
Back in 1994, Glenn was a first-round draft pick, expected to shine as a cornerback under coach Pete Carroll. However, his inaugural game was in Detroit, where he gave up a touchdown to Herman Moore. Things took a turn for the worse the following week in Philadelphia.
During that game, Glenn attempted to return a punt but fumbled it, and surprisingly, he managed to muffle two others. The fumble was scooped up by Herschel Walker, leading to an Eagles touchdown.
“It was pretty rough; I really don’t want to get into it,” Glenn joked, recalling that first preseason experience. “I mean, there I was, trying to catch a punt, and there’s this 240-pound guy—Herschel Walker—coming right at me.”
Looking ahead, Glenn hopes to see improvement when the Jets face off against the Packers on Saturday night, marking the start of their preseason.
Since his arrival in January, Glenn has been working to instill a tough, detail-oriented culture within the team. The real test will come when they step onto Lambeau Field to compete against another team for the first time.
“You know, whenever we hit the grass, my first expectation is, of course, to win,” Glenn said. “But I hope we win in a way that reflects what we want to build during camp. It’s not just about the scoreboard; I want to see our team show up on tape and make an impact.”
This game also marks the debut of quarterback Justin Fields for the Jets. He’s had a rollercoaster of performances during training camp, and all eyes will be on him as he takes the field.
Glenn confirmed this week that Fields will play on Saturday, but he’s somewhat vague on the duration. Perhaps it depends on how well the first drive goes.
“We’re playing,” Glenn mentioned regarding the starters. “I mean, we don’t exactly know how long everyone will be in there; that depends on how the game flows.”
A successful drive could be just what Glenn is looking for; three-and-out might lead to another series for the starters.
Fields expressed his eagerness for preseason games earlier in the week, seeing them as an opportunity to mesh with new offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand and the revamped Jets offense.
“I think it’s essential for us to get some time on the field,” Fields said. “It’s great for the team and for Tanner, too.”
Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner noted that it’s no surprise Glenn wants the starters to take the field. “Honestly, if you look at what’s going on, it’s working. He’s making sure we’re ready to face other teams,” Gardner commented. “I’m excited about it, but honestly, I wasn’t surprised.”
