FBI’s Investigation into Catholic Groups Raises Concerns

On July 22, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) unveiled a new interim staff report regarding former President Joe Biden’s alleged surveillance of Catholic groups.

This report includes fresh information attributed to FBI Director Kash Patel. The revelations, when combined with previously known details, paint a troubling picture of potential overreach by the FBI under Biden’s leadership.

One pointed criticism states, “This was not a mistake. It was a well-planned effort to threaten and harass Catholics from practicing.” The FBI’s focus on “radical traditionalist Catholics” has raised eyebrows. Who exactly are these individuals? According to an FBI review, many employees had difficulty defining “radical traditionalist Catholicism” while drafting memos regarding the investigation.

This raises questions: how can the FBI label Catholics as problematic when agents can’t even articulate who they are? Some agents linked these so-called “Lad Trad” Catholics to “racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists,” which, quite frankly, seems perplexing. After all, the evidence shows no connection between very conservative Catholics and any form of violence.

Despite this lack of proof, some FBI operatives went so far as to categorize “specific Catholic Americans as potential domestic terrorists.” The justification for this classification? Articles that employees read. For instance, one titled “How Extremist Gun Cultures Are Trying to Adopt Rosary” was named as evidence of a supposed malicious agenda by “Rad Trad” Catholics.

The Society of St. Pius X stands out as an example of a Catholic group regarded by the FBI as emblematic of extreme conservatism. However, this particular group is known for its separation from the Catholic Church, stemming from dissatisfaction with Vatican II reforms in the 1960s. Initially excommunicated, they were later recognized but remain on the periphery of recognized Catholicism.

I’ve often noted that the FBI’s focus seems to extend beyond just the SSPX and “Rad-Trads.” This looks suspiciously like a pretext for broader investigations into Catholic practices.

Recent findings indicate the FBI has plans to analyze the “Mainline Parish.” Moreover, it appears agents without any substantial evidence suspect that the mainstream Catholic Church might act as a conduit for extremist activities.

This absurd investigation even targeted Catholics known for being welcoming toward abortion supporters. These faithful individuals were mischaracterized as threats due to their adherence to traditional Catholic teachings. Similarly, those valuing conservative family roles found themselves labeled as “radicals.”

This situation highlights significant issues regarding the FBI’s politicization under Biden’s presidency.

Crucially, the scrutiny seems directed not at any individual opposed to Catholic doctrine but rather at committed members of the Church itself. It’s quite strange to see, I think, that there may be factions within both the Catholic community and the FBI that appear resistant to traditional church teachings.

While this might not seem to balance out, the consequences are certainly alarming.

It should be noted that the FBI’s investigation wasn’t confined to profiles of Catholics in the U.S. The inquiry initially based in Richmond, extended its reach to places like Louisville, Milwaukee, and even Portland—and that’s not all. The investigation touched not just domestic but also foreign territories, involving the FBI’s London office. This aligns with their apparent aim to target the Catholic Church as part of a larger “threat mitigation” strategy.

This situation, far from being a mere oversight, represents a calculated effort to undermine the practice of Catholicism. Findings from a Federal Government Committee on Weaponization clearly state, “there is no justification for the Memorandum to insert federal law enforcement into Catholic worship houses.”

Under the Biden administration, the FBI’s investigations into Catholics, particularly those who maintain traditional moral values, represent a troubling breach of civil liberties. One would think a government that identifies itself as “respectfully Catholic” should act differently.

I appreciate the ongoing efforts of Rep. Jim Jordan and his team in revealing these complexities.
