Revival of 'Sound of Music' at the Kennedy Center inspires family memories

The Kennedy Center’s “The Sound of Music” Takes Center Stage

The upcoming production of “The Sound of Music” at the Kennedy Center has drawn considerable attention. Sarah Portner, reflecting on her childhood, recalled how the story of a young woman leaving a monastery to care for Captain Von Trapp’s seven children made a lasting impact on her. She’s eager to catch the show when it arrives in March, having already secured her tickets.

“My mom is the youngest of six, and she grew up in a small village in Ireland,” Portner shared. “Each of her siblings saw the film when it first came out. It was a family affair, really. My sister and I finally got to see it together when we were old enough.” She described the narrative as a “lifetime favorite,” emphasizing the enduring lessons it offers.

“It’s about resilience, family, and unconditional love,” Portner continued. “Sure, some might think those themes are cliché, but they truly help navigate life’s ups and downs.” The production is set to run in Washington, D.C., from September 9 to October 5, 2025, under the direction of three-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien. It will feature stunning stage designs recreating Austria’s picturesque countryside, complete with the memorable staircase from Captain Von Trapp’s home.

Katie Burnham, who attended the show with her sister, expressed that valuable lessons emerge from challenging times. “It’s not overly political, but I think we can glean a lot from past generations,” she stated, noting similarities to her family’s legacy. Meanwhile, her sister Caroline pointed out the connection younger generations, including those in Gen Z, feel to classic tales like “The Sound of Music.” “It creates a sense of community,” she remarked, referencing Maria’s journey as she leaves the convent to form a new family with Von Trapp’s children.

Burnham reflected on the nostalgia that the story evokes for her peers, particularly in a modern context where many feel disconnected due to technology and hectic work lives. “It’s a reminder to embrace community, even if it’s through a lens of nostalgia,” she shared. “While the historical context was challenging in Austria, there’s something comforting about the themes.”

Ellen Wilson, influenced by her parents’ experiences in Germany, highlighted the loyalty to family and country depicted in the story. “It’s fascinating, with their escape from Austria during such turmoil,” she commented. Valerie Wheeler expressed enthusiasm for the live performance, articulating a long-standing love for theatrical experiences, especially at notable venues like the Kennedy Center. Having taught English for over three decades, she recognizes the timelessness of “The Sound of Music,” which began as a Broadway musical in 1959 before becoming the iconic film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer in 1965.

The film earned five Academy Awards and was a remarkable box office success, grossing $158 million in the U.S. and $286 million worldwide against a budget of just $8 million. As the anniversary of its premiere approaches, this production is set to celebrate the lasting legacy of a beloved story.
