Rex Culpepper, ex-quarterback for Syracuse, dies in a dirt bike crash

Rex Culpepper, Former Syracuse Quarterback, Passes Away at 28

Rex Culpepper, the former quarterback for the Syracuse Orange, died last weekend due to injuries from a dirt bike accident in Georgia. He was just 28 years old.

The Syracuse football program shared their sorrow on X, stating, “Our Orange family mourns the loss of Rex Culpepper, who passed away this weekend at the age of 28. Rex faced cancer at 20 while playing for the Orange and lived life with incredible passion.” They continued, “He played 30 games of fierce football. Our thoughts are with the Culpepper family and all those who held him dear.”

Culpepper’s fiancée, Savannah Morgan, confirmed his passing in a heartfelt Instagram post, sharing photos and videos of their time together. It’s heartbreaking to think he had proposed to her less than a month prior.

In her post, Morgan reflected, “No one expects to meet their soulmate and lose them just six years later. Rex was unsure about soulmates, but he realized towards the end that he felt a profound connection with me.”

She added, “We embraced every day like it was our last. From picking up new hobbies to traveling, we didn’t miss a moment together. I have no regrets about any day in our six years.”

Culpepper served primarily as a backup quarterback for the Orange from 2017 to 2020 and took the field as a tight end in some games. His journey through cancer treatment made him a well-known figure on the team. He made a notable appearance during the 2018 spring game, where he threw a touchdown to a roaring crowd, earning praise from teammates and coaches.

Throughout his career, Culpepper appeared in 30 games, including 16 as a quarterback, and accumulated 1,546 passing yards along with 11 touchdown passes. In March 2018, he faced a battle with testicular cancer but emerged victorious after extensive chemotherapy, being declared cancer-free that June.

It’s worth mentioning that Culpepper was the son of former NFL player Brad Culpepper, who played as a defensive tackle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Minnesota Vikings, and Chicago Bears.
