Rey Mysterio’s Journey from AAA to WWE
LAS VEGAS – Long before Rey Mysterio became famous for his iconic 619 move or established himself as a champion in WWE, he was making his early marks in the world of wrestling at AAA.
Mysterio participated in the very first Triplemania event back in 1993. Known then as Rey Misterio Jr., he teamed up with Volador and Misterioso to face off against Tony Arce, Vulcano, and Rocco Valente, who formed Los Destructores. Fast forward over thirty years, AAA is intertwined with WWE, Mysterio is now the general manager of AAA, and he’s headlining the main event for Triplemania 34 Night 1 in Las Vegas.
“It’s a very special moment for me in so many ways,” he reflected with OutKick Dropkick. “The fact that I’m now the new GM of AAA, and that AAA was the first company that opened doors for me. I was at the very first AAA show in ’92 and the first Triplemania in ’93. So, seeing this come full circle and being in this position now… it’s been an amazing ride.”
Mysterio, in his new role, has a lot on his plate but feels confident managing various aspects. He mentioned that things got a bit out of hand when he jumped on Omos, leading to the formation of a match that is significant for tonight’s first-ever two-night Triplemania event, with the second night scheduled in Mexico City.
The rivalry between Mysterio and the towering 7-foot-3 Omos appears to be reaching a climax. Omos had been temporarily suspended after injuring Galeno and then attacking Mysterio back in August. He recently reappeared as a spectator and turned aggressive once again, thanks to assistance from Dominik Mysterio.
Diving into his storied career, Mysterio has faced countless formidable opponents and has often come out on top, which makes facing Omos somewhat of a manageable challenge for him. “I’ve felt his power. He’s a very strong dude. Very intimidating,” he commented about Omos. “But it doesn’t faze me. I’ve always been the smallest in my training class. I’ve wrestled bigger guys throughout my career, so, I’m motivated and just eager to step into the ring tonight.”
As the general manager, he knows he has to establish his authority. “I need to send a message that no one in the AAA locker room should think they can intimidate me. There need to be boundaries that everyone respects,” he explained regarding his handling of the situation with Omos.
If Mysterio loses the match, Omos will be reinstated. If Mysterio wins, however, Omos will be barred from competing in AAA ever again.
Triplemania 34 Night 1 is happening at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas tonight, with Night 2 set for Sunday at Arena CDMX. The start time is at 10 p.m. ET, and the events will be broadcast on YouTube.
