Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s campaign has added North Carolina to its expanded list of battleground states eligible for November voting.
The independent candidate’s campaign said it had collected enough signatures to nominate Kennedy for the White House through its We The People party, with 23,000 pledges of support in purple states.
“We have field teams, volunteers, legal teams, paid circulars, supporters and strategists ready to get the job done,” Kennedy campaign spokeswoman Stephanie Speer said in a statement Monday announcing the news. Stated.
North Carolina is considered a key battleground state for all parties in 2024, including potential third-party tickets. Former President Trump won the state by just over 1 percentage point in 2020, giving Republicans a slight advantage and motivating Democrats to try to win this cycle.
With the addition of the Tar Heel State, Kennedy now has five states eligible to vote, including Utah, New Hampshire and Hawaii. In Nevada, he cleared the signature threshold before meeting the conditions to declare his name as vice president, raising questions about whether he would need to collect signatures in support of him again.
Mr. Kennedy’s team hopes that choosing Nicole Shanahan as his running mate will give more voters a reason to join him in promoting voting access. Mr. Shanahan, a former high-tech lawyer who was once married to a Google co-founder, is seen as a tactical asset to his campaign’s vote access strategy.
