RFK Jr. hints at changes to the CDC following the director's firing debate

CDC Director’s Controversial Stance

Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made waves on Thursday during a statement about the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This came after Coach Susan Monares raised concerns about a shooting incident, which was deemed “trouble.”

“We’ll address that,” he commented during an appearance on Fox & Friends, adding rather bluntly, “And maybe some people shouldn’t work there anymore.”

Monares, who was appointed as CDC director less than a month ago, has resisted efforts to remove her from the role, even after HHS indicated she would be leaving.

CDC Director’s Stance on Job Security

Susan Monares is holding her ground, despite HHS’s announcement. Other officials, however, are reportedly stepping down, including Dr. Daniel Jernigan, who leads the National Centre for Emerging and Zoonotic Diseases, and Demetre Daskalakis from the National Centre for Demunization and Respiratory Disease.

Attorneys Mark Zaid and Abbe Lowell, representing Monares, are adamant that she has not been officially dismissed. They stated, “Dr. Monares chose to prioritize public health over political agendas, which is why she has faced backlash.” The lawyers conveyed that Monares plans to remain in her position.

CDC in Turmoil

It seems approximately 600 employees from the CDC have resigned following a court ruling related to certain plans under the Trump administration.

Kennedy has expressed concerns about the CDC’s direction, emphasizing a need for alignment with President Trump’s vision. He mentioned, “We’ve witnessed misinformation during COVID, from testing to mask protocols and school closures, which have negatively impacted many.” The emphasis seems to be on the necessity of strong leadership to realign the agency’s priorities.

In a more official comment, HHS stated simply, “Susan Monares is no longer the director of the CDC. We appreciate her service to the American public.” It appears that the dynamics within the CDC are far from settled.
