Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s running mate, Nicole Shanahan, shared her views on abortion in a lengthy online post after the Arizona Supreme Court’s abortion law made national news on Tuesday.
“People are asking me what my views are on abortion.” Shanahan’s post on Xformerly Twitter.
Shanahan, who was recently nominated as President Kennedy’s running mate, is the mother of one child with Google co-founder Sergey Brin.
She said that as a mother, “I don’t like the feeling of someone controlling my body.” She said that in her mind, as a woman, she “doesn’t think it’s right to end a viable life,” especially if she and her unborn child are healthy.
“As someone who believes in the sanctity of life, I can hold both beliefs at the same time,” she said.
The Arizona Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld an 1864 law that made abortion a felony, reigniting the debate over reproductive rights in the wake of the 2022 Roe v. Wade reversal.
Arizona’s law overturns the 15-week abortion ban and makes no exceptions for rape or incest. The only exception is “if necessary” to save the life of a pregnant person.
In her post, Shanahan wrote about her own health, the health of her baby, and any “extenuating circumstances” that could lead to an abortion, including “what would happen to that baby if it were born under the following circumstances?” There are many things that need to be done.” It is impossible to maintain a good and healthy life. ”
“When it comes to economics, I support bringing babies into the world through community support for both mothers and babies. Every mother who gives birth to a healthy baby wants what is best for her baby. I hope so,” she said. “Let’s help them do that.”
The new vice presidential candidate said she and Kennedy are “dedicated to uncovering solutions in the best interests of mothers and babies.”
