Virginia Gubernatorial Race Heats Up with New Funding and Controversy

The Republican Governors Association is stepping up its game, adding $1.5 million to support former Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger and Republican candidate Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earl Sears in the upcoming gubernatorial election this November.

This fresh funding follows serious allegations that Republicans are attempting to influence the results in Virginia’s attorney general race. Democratic candidate Jay Jones admitted to sending a controversial message last year, where he compared former Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert to notorious mass murderers and mentioned, rather strikingly, that he would use both bullets to shoot the Republican if given the chance.

Since National Review highlighted the text, Jones has found himself in a public relations crisis, facing calls from Republicans to exit the race.

Democratic Candidate Under Fire

Earl Sears, who is currently trailing in the polls behind Spanberger in the race to replace term-limited Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, has accused Spanberger of failing to call for Jones’s withdrawal. In a strategic move, Earl Sears launched a new ad linking Spanberger to Jones, urging voters to “reject the madness” and “vote Republican.”

“This election isn’t just about party lines; it’s about common sense versus violence,” asserted Peyton Vogel, a spokesperson for Earl Sears’ campaign. “RGA recognizes what’s at stake in Virginia, and their support will empower us to stand firm against Spanberger’s aggressive approach.”

The RGA’s financial boost, which has been confirmed by multiple sources, now puts its spending on par with the approximately $5 million that Spanberger has received from the Democratic Governors Association. However, it still lags behind the $11 million that helped elect Youngkin four years ago.

Upcoming Debate and Reactions

The two candidates will go head-to-head in a debate set for Thursday night, expected to center around the controversy of Jones’s past messages. Virginia and New Jersey are the only states holding gubernatorial races the year after a presidential election, making these contests particularly significant as indicators for the midterms.

In response to the escalating situation, DGA communications director Sam Newton dismissed Earl Sears’s campaign as “disastrous.” He also suggested that instead of trying to prop up a failing campaign, the RGA should ask Donald Trump why he hasn’t yet endorsed Sears.

Following his controversial comments, Jones has not appeared at any campaign events since Friday. The majority of Virginia Democrats, including two U.S. senators, have condemned his statements but, interestingly, have not called for him to withdraw.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who serves as DGA vice chairman and will soon take the helm, termed Jones’s text messages as “completely inappropriate.” He expressed his disapproval of any rhetoric that promotes political violence but admitted he’s not well-versed in the ongoing situation necessitating calls for Jones to end his campaign.
