Rhode Island Prosecutor Suspended After Arrest

Rhode Island prosecutors have decided to take action after an incident involving Special Assistant Devon Flanagan, who was arrested for intended trespassing. This incident occurred on August 14 at the Clark Cookhouse Restaurant in Newport, leading to her being placed on six months of unpaid leave.

Attorney General Peter Neronha expressed disappointment, stating, “Flanagan’s actions not only embarrassed herself but also her office and me.” He emphasized the importance of holding lawyers to high personal and professional standards, which, unfortunately, Flanagan did not uphold in this case.

The situation escalated when police were called to the restaurant shortly before 10 PM due to Flanagan’s friend, who was drunk and refused to leave. During the confrontation, Flanagan attempted to intervene, insisting that officers turn off their body cameras, claiming citizens had that right. Amidst the chaos, she repeatedly declared her status as an Assistant General, asserting, “I’m an AG! I’m an AG!” as she faced arrest.

Neronha remarked that he hopes this experience will lead Flanagan to reflect seriously on her behavior and encourage personal growth. “I believe our worst moments can push us to become better people,” he said.

Following her arrest, Flanagan reportedly opted not to contest the charges, which means the case may be dismissed in six months. Her attorney, Kevin Hagan, has not commented on the situation.

Neronha also pointed out that Flanagan’s assertion about the police protocol regarding cameras was incorrect. He described her as having embarrassed the entire legal team, stating, “I have 110 lawyers. She embarrassed them all. This isn’t something I’ve encountered often as Attorney General.”
