Rhode Island Special Assistant Attorney General Devon Flanagan placed on unpaid leave following viral arrest footage

The Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office reported that Special Assistant Devon Flanagan, who was arrested earlier this week, expressed remorse after allegedly attempting to use her position to evade arrest.

As the office investigates the matter, Flanagan has been placed on paid leave. Starting Monday, she will transition to unpaid leave, although the duration of this status remains uncertain pending a final employment decision.

The Attorney General’s Office has not provided further details about the ongoing review or any outcome possibilities.

Records indicate Flanagan earned approximately $113,000 annually as a special attorney general, as noted by the Boston Globe.

During her arrest, Flanagan insisted, “I’m an AG! I’m an AG!” while officers were attempting to detain her, warning, “You’ll regret this.” She made the claim again as she was being placed in the police car.

One officer responded, “Good for you, I won’t give it that way.”

Attorney General Peter Neronha later described Flanagan’s behavior as “unforgivable” and suggested it could lead to significant sanctions, although he acknowledged past incidents involving staff.

“I oversee 110 lawyers, and this has been an embarrassing situation. I’ve dealt with cases before, even having to take someone home for driving drunk,” Neronha remarked.

He indicated the need for careful consideration in handling the situation, especially as it pertains to maintaining a competent legal team. Neronha believed the incident was likely alcohol-related but noted he did not excuse her actions.

Despite Flanagan’s previous good standing, being well-regarded by the State Bar Association, she is now working on measures to make amends with the Port Police Department, including issuing an apology.

When asked about specifics, Neronha expressed confusion regarding Flanagan’s statement about body cameras, implying she wasn’t thinking clearly at the time.

“It’s humiliating,” he stated, acknowledging that whatever happens next, Flanagan would likely face significant consequences and time away from her role. It’s certainly a shame.
