Richard Gere Comments on Trump and the Dalai Lama

Actor Richard Gere recently expressed doubt that even the Dalai Lama could sway President Donald Trump, despite the “amazing” impact he’s had on the United States. Gere, known for his role in “Pretty Woman,” spoke about this during a discussion about his new documentary, “Wisdom of Happiness,” which features insights from the Dalai Lama—someone Gere calls a close friend.

Reflecting on the Dalai Lama’s speech, Gere noted that it highlighted how the U.S. is currently on a “very wrong path.” However, he seems unsure if Trump’s views could be changed by such influence. “I don’t know if it’s going to affect him or not,” he said, adding, “I hope so. I hope so. But man, I don’t know how to explain what he’s done to this country.”

He underscored the importance of holding elected leaders accountable, urging the need for visionaries who can foster a better world. “If we want the world to be a certain way, we have to elect leaders who can lead us,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of coexistence rather than the ongoing “crazy battlefield” that seems prevalent today, pointing to the “crude thinking” in current leadership.

Gere has been vocal about his disapproval of Trump, suggesting that the president is a deeply troubling figure. “Our president is completely… he’s not just crazy. He’s a dark, dark presence,” he remarked in the past. He has also labeled Trump a “bully and a thug,” asserting that the country is in a bleak situation under his leadership.

As he continues to advocate for kindness, understanding, and truth, Gere encourages vigilance in the face of authoritarianism, reminding people to stand up and speak out. “We have to be energetic, courageous,” Gere added, expressing hope that these values can guide people through challenging times.
