These are the types of performances that linger in the minds of management during contract discussions.
Controversial Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens faced significant criticism after a lackluster showing in what some called a critical loss to the Lions. Richard Sherman, a former star cornerback, mentioned on Amazon Prime’s postgame broadcast that he felt Pickens appeared “not interested.”
Despite CeeDee Lamb being sidelined due to a concussion, Pickens managed only five receptions for 37 yards.
“The highlight of the game was George Pickens,” Sherman commented following Detroit’s 44-30 victory.
“He looked disinterested, especially as the game wore on. If you want to be considered a superstar, you can’t just fade away. It doesn’t matter how the game is going; you’ve got to keep making your presence felt—or at least try.”
After spending three years in Pittsburgh, Pickens is having the best season of his career with Dallas, already achieving personal bests with 78 receptions, 1,179 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns.
Reports have suggested that, despite the Cowboys already investing heavily in Lamb, they plan to retain Pickens due to his impressive performance. He could present himself as a top-tier receiver, potentially commanding over $30 million a season.
However, teams often look for ways to negotiate lower salaries. Pickens had already faced questions about his experience back in Pittsburgh when Coach Mike Tomlin highlighted his youthful mistakes.
It might be easy to dismiss this game as just one bad outing, but the footage from this crucial match for the Cowboys certainly raised eyebrows.
Just when they needed him to step up, Pickens hardly made a mark. Sherman highlighted a particular incomplete route as evidence of him “cruising.” This was among several less-than-stellar moments, such as a crucial drop that led to a turnover while Dallas was in a strong position.
“You were expected to be the guy with Lamb out,” Sherman noted. “If you can’t deliver on a key play and seem to lack effort, that’s an issue. If you’re hoping to secure a hefty contract, you need to prove you’re reliable, and this performance raises doubts.”
In response to allegations regarding Pickens’ energy level, Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer disagreed, stating, “He was getting doubled. Once CeeDee left, the defense focused on him more.”
Pickens has a chance to bounce back in Week 15 against the Vikings, especially if Lamb remains unavailable. Each game is critical for a receiver seeking a lucrative contract, especially given the previous year’s concerns.
Former ESPN analyst Trey Wingo remarked on social media, “The Pickens we witnessed last night demonstrates precisely why Pittsburgh chose to part ways with him.”
