Carlisle Responds to Thibodeau’s Departure from Knicks
Rick Carlisle expressed his disbelief over the New York Knicks’ decision to part ways with coach Tom Thibodeau. At a press conference leading up to the NBA Finals on Wednesday, Carlisle reflected on the surprising developments that took the basketball world by storm just a day prior.
“It felt like one of those fake AI reports when you first hear about it,” Carlisle remarked. “It just doesn’t seem real, especially when you consider how the players feel about him.” This shakeup followed the Pacers’ elimination of the Knicks in six games during the Eastern Conference Finals, marking the end of Thibodeau’s five-year tenure at the helm.
Carlisle is confident Thibodeau won’t remain out of work for long, having achieved a record of 226-174 in the regular season with the Knicks and making the playoffs four times in five years. “Ownership has the right to make these decisions unilaterally,” he said. “I think Tom will be just fine finding his next opportunity.”
The Knicks are now in the early stages of searching for a new head coach, with potential candidates such as Johnny Bryant and Jay Wright emerging.
Regardless of who ultimately gets the gig, Carlisle acknowledged the challenges ahead. “Coaching the Knicks is a unique situation,” he explained. “With such a vast fan base and global influence, it’s undoubtedly one of the toughest positions. Many successful coaches had only short stints but were highly impactful, yet there were also plenty of tough years.”
Meanwhile, Carlisle and the Pacers are gearing up to face the Thunder in Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night in Oklahoma City.
