The AR-style rifle used in the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump was reportedly purchased by the 20-year-old shooter’s father.
According to the Wall Street Journal, suspect Thomas Matthew Crooks shot the former president on Saturday during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, using a gun purchased by his father.
His weapon was recovered from the scene after he was shot and killed by a Secret Service sniper shortly after firing several shots in President Trump’s direction.
A bullet grazed the 45th president’s ear and one rally attendee was killed.
Two others were seriously injured in the attack.
The Wall Street Journal’s sources said an explosive device was also found in a car that Crooks left behind not far from the Trump rally.
Police officials told reporters they had received multiple reports of suspicious packages around the area and had dispatched explosives disposal technicians.
Authorities worked late into the night to secure the scene before searching Crooks’ family home, the sources added.
Early Sunday morning, Crooks’ neighbor told The Post that the bomb disposal unit had reported there were explosives at the home.
Authorities have not released a motive for the shooting.
