New Legislation on Military Academy Sports Teams

Key Republicans, with backing from activist Riley Gaines, have proposed a new bill aimed at categorizing sports teams at military academies based on biological gender.

In a conversation with Fox News Digital, Dusty Johnson, a Republican from South Dakota, stressed the necessity for Congress to take action given its authority over these institutions. He mentioned, “There’s a notable physiological difference between men and women. I think most people are aware of this, and this legislation ensures a level playing field at our military academies.”

He also expressed the desire for the governing council to have clear oversight, indicating how critical this responsibility is for the management of the service academies.

Riley Gaines, host of the podcast “Gaines for Girls,” voiced her support for the bill, drawing on her own college sports experiences. “Having faced the repercussions of unfair competition in women’s sports, I am a strong advocate for protecting women under the Military Academy Act,” she remarked. Gaines pointed out that military academies should exemplify fairness and integrity, rather than compromise female athletes amid political correctness.

She added that South Dakota’s bill ensures existing protections remain in place for those brave young women training to lead.

Dusty Johnson, noted for being the chairman of the Main Street Caucus, is spearheading this legislative effort. He highlighted the importance of establishing a military academy that focuses on preparing future leaders instead of engaging in cultural debates.

Gaines gained recognition after competing against transgender swimmer Lia Thomas, and her push for biological sex limitations in sports has brought her into the national spotlight. This isn’t her first stand in these discussions; she previously supported legislation aimed at safeguarding women and girls in sports, even testifying before the House Oversight Committee in 2023.

Senator Tommy Tuberville from Alabama is also leading the bill in the Senate. He stated, “Our service academy should prioritize developing the next generation of leaders, not getting involved in cultural discussions.”

The proposed law aims to “prohibit men from participating in athletic programs or activities at military service academies designated for women or girls,” aligning with perspectives from organizations like the Independent Women’s Law Center, who also back the bill.
