Social Unrest Erupts in London Following Morocco’s World Cup Exit
Late Thursday night, tensions flared in parts of London, seemingly triggered by Morocco’s recent defeat in the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the hands of France.
France triumphed over Morocco with a score of 2-0, marking a second successive loss for the African nation in this tournament.
After the match, there were concerns about potential riots in Paris, recalling the disturbances that erupted after Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League victory over Arsenal earlier this year. However, reports from Edgware Road in northwest London revealed police confronting large crowds, as smoke filled the air and debris was scattered throughout the streets.
Riot police, clad in shields and bulletproof gear, attempted to manage the situation as they clashed with individuals setting off fireworks and throwing objects. Videos surfaced showing one police officer lying on the ground, raising questions about the circumstances leading to their fall.
Meanwhile, fans waved Moroccan flags, blocking traffic and even climbing onto vehicles. It was a chaotic scene, reminiscent of previous other protests wherein anger had spilled into the streets.
In contrast to London, Paris appeared more celebratory than tumultuous. Streets were packed with supporters from both France and Morocco, causing traffic snarls across the city. Horns blared from cars displaying flags of both nations, with spectators on the Champs-Elysées joining in the revelry.
Kylian Mbappé scored his eighth goal during this World Cup, tying him with Argentina’s Lionel Messi as the tournament’s top scorer. Ousmane Dembele added another to France’s tally, securing their place in the semi-finals for the third time in a row. Although Morocco lost, their performance in this World Cup has been historic; they became the first African country to reach the quarter-finals multiple times.
With Morocco’s exit, no African nations remain in the tournament. France is set to face either Spain or Belgium next, in addition to matchups featuring England against Norway and Argentina versus Switzerland.
