Rip current almost drowns three children during T-ball team’s beach outing: ‘Help me! Help me!’

A planned beach day for a T-ball team in Florida turned into a frightening situation when three young children found themselves caught in a dangerous rip current.

Thanks to the quick actions of a good Samaritan and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, what could have been a tragedy was averted at Huguenot Memorial Park on a Saturday afternoon.

“Help me! Help me!” The cries for assistance came from a boy struggling against the currents.

Earlier, deputies had observed beachgoer Stephen Insco urging children to get out of the water for their safety.

Upon hearing the desperate calls, Beach Patrol Officer Tyler Sweeney swiftly removed his gear, grabbed a buoy, and jumped in. Meanwhile, Officer Billy Crocker tended to an unresponsive eight-year-old girl, getting ready to perform CPR.

After administering some chest compressions, she began to show signs of life.

Firefighters quickly arrived, administered oxygen, and transported her to a nearby hospital. In the meantime, Sweeney brought the boy safely to the beach.

“I’m just really thankful that all my kids are okay today,” a parent remarked, recognizing how easily things could have gone wrong.

The sheriff’s office noted that Crocker had recently been awarded Officer of the Month for his exemplary work on a hit-and-run case involving a six-year-old.

“Water safety cannot be stressed enough,” the sheriff’s office cautioned. “Rip currents and rough surf can be deadly. Both adults and children should be mindful of their swimming abilities and should not hesitate to stay out if conditions seem unsafe.”
