Rising star Michigan Dem critical of Schumer leadership launches 2026 Senate bid

The Democratic senator, who has attracted public attention in the past few years, has launched a bid for the US Senate that is likely to be a famous, expensive, brutal showdown in open seating for the party's control in Battlegrounds Michigan.

Michigan Sen. Mallory McMorrow stressed that she is an outsider and called for a new generation of Washington leaders as she announced her candidacy for Senator Gary Peters after resignation in 2026. It's the seat Republicans are aiming to turn from blue to red.

in Announcement video posted on YouTubeMcMorrow emphasized that “the same old crap from Washington” does not solve the country's problems.

“We need a new leader because the same people in DC were caught up in this mess aren't meant to drive us out of it,” she added.

McMorrow, 38, did not mention the announcement about longtime Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y., but she previously said she would not support Schumer's continued presence as the Chamber of Commerce party leader.

Schumer faced a fierce backlash from within his own party last month after he supported a Republican government fundraising bill backed by President Donald Trump but opposed most Congressional Democrats.

McMorrow targeted Trump and his top donor and White House adviser billionaire Elon Musk in the video announcement.

“Frankly, there's a lot of fear, anger and uncertainty for now about people in power who don't have business there,” she accused.

McMorrow gained national attention in 2022 as she forced her back against Republican lawmakers who accused her of being a “grooming” child, thanks to a viral speech in the Michigan Senate.

And she grabbed more praise as she held up an oversized copy of “Project 2025,” a conservative blueprint targeted by her party from a fellow Democrat last summer, as she targeted GOP during her speech at the Democratic National Convention.

McMorrow, who represents Michigan Senator Detroit and some of the surrounding suburbs, is trying to do the few politicians he's been to in recent decades.

Among the few who made that transition were former President Barack Obama and Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa.

But thanks to her national profile, McMorrow has built a substantial donor network from coast to coast.

McMorrow probably doesn't have a field of democratic Senate nominations himself.

Kristen MacDonald Rivet and Haley Stevens are considering running, similar to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

However, Pete Batigieg, the 2020 Democratic presidential candidate who served as Transportation Secretary in President Joe Biden's administration last month, ruled out the run after seriously considering his bid.

In a race to nominate the GOP Senator, former Rep. Mike Rodgers announced at the end of January that he was “strongly considering” the second Republican run.

Fox News confirmed last month that Rodgers is likely to announce his campaign in the coming weeks. Rogers hired veteran Republican strategist and 2024 Trump co-campaign manager Chris Lacivita as senior advisor.

Rogers won the 2024 GOP Senator nomination in Michigan, but was slightly defeated by Democratic nominee Rep. Elissa Slotkin in the Democratic election last November for the long-time Senator of retired Senator Debbie Stavenow. Slotkin, who had far surpassed the Rogers, framed him with about 19,000 votes, or a third of a percentage point.
