Rising White Sox player sidelined for 6-12 weeks due to serious injury

The Chicago White Sox, sitting atop the American League Central Division, are facing significant injury challenges.

During a game against the Rangers on Monday night, catcher Kyle Thiel sustained a high left ankle sprain. Manager Will Venable shared on Tuesday that Thiel may be sidelined for about six to 12 weeks.

As a result, the team has placed Thiel on the 10-day injured list and called up Edgar Kerro to take his place.

This marks Thiel’s second stint on the injured list this season, which has already seen him grapple with three significant injuries so far. He initially faced a setback at the start of the season when he hurt his right hamstring while representing Italy in the World Baseball Classic.

Later, in May, he sprained his right LCL during rehabilitation, which kept him out for another month.

Since returning on June 22, Thiel has played in 19 games, managing a batting average of .190 with two home runs. Last season, he participated in 78 games and achieved a batting line of .273/.375/.411.

Thiel’s recovery timeline could affect his ability to contribute, potentially extending into the playoffs, where the White Sox hope to remain competitive. As of July 21, the team is tied for first in the division with the Guardians, and they boast the second-best goal differential in the American League.

A six-week recovery would push Thiel’s return to the latter part of the season, but if it takes up to 12 weeks, he might miss the entire playoff run.

Given the gravity of Thiel’s injury, the White Sox may explore options for another catcher as the Aug. 3 trade deadline nears. While names like Adley Rutschman, Hunter Goodman, or Shea Langeliers aren’t expected to be pursued, the team might consider other catchers who become available.
