Ritchie Torres warns far left has ‘outsized power’ over Democratic Party

Rep. Ritchie Torres of DN.Y. denounced the “college-educated elite” pushing absurd concepts like “refund the police” on Thursday to working-class voters.

Torres nurtured the topic while discussing how Democrats thrive under the Trump administration “Politics War Room” podcast With Democratic strategist James Kerrville. Torres emphasized how he expressed his “common sense” sensibility of working class in the Bronx area.

“Absurdities like 'rebate the police', 'adjusting ice' and 'Latinos' are not coming from working-class people,” Torres said. “These ideas come from the university-educated elites of our society.”

He cited the example of an unnamed elected official who advocated the abolition of police despite coming from a wealthier, insulated neighborhood. Torres called it an elite social experiment, with fatal consequences for lower classes and minority citizens.

However, he didn't believe Fringe, progressive issues, were the reason Democrats lost in 2024. Torres argued that more politicians on the left and right likely influenced issues affecting the party so that former President Biden would not act to secure the border.

“If it was widely popular among the American people, why did he wait all the time to act, and the answer was simple. He was on the far left,” Torres said. “On the far left is the Democratic message and the power to policy making, which made us viable in the general election.”

He said, “I found out there's an argument that in order to reverse the outcome of the 2024 election, we have to accept the far left. That makes no sense to me.”

Torres frequently called his own party for his focus on the unpopular and fringe issue, which he believes to discourage centralist voters.

He also fired fire from progressive activists and House members in support of Israel after the Hamastero attack on October 7th.
