Nathan Barrett, the younger brother of Raptors star R.J., “became ill and was at home for several weeks” before passing away on Tuesday. According to Sportsnet’s Michael Grange.
RJ has been away from the team since Wednesday for “personal reasons.”
The cause of death of the 19-year-old, who was studying to become a pilot, has not been disclosed.
Like his older brother, Nathan played high school basketball as a 6-foot-1-inch guard at Montverde Academy in Florida.
“He’s growing up so fast. It’s crazy because every time I see him he’s getting taller and now he’s starting to walk in my shoes,” RJ told The Post’s Steve Serby in June 2023. . “He’s more of a point guard,” but he’s really aggressive. ”
The family is led by former St. John’s basketball star and Canada Basketball GM Rowan Barrett and Kesha (Duhaney) Barrett, a Bronx native and track and field athlete at St. John’s University.
“My family is very competitive” RJ told Slam in 2018. “Everyone’s always trying to beat each other. Everyone’s an athlete, so that’s where all of my competitiveness lies.”
RJ, now 23, was selected by the Knicks with the third pick in the 2019 NBA Draft after being a star player at Duke University, but Nathan chose to attend flight school.
Nathan passed away on Tuesday surrounded by his family, church and friends, according to a statement from Barrett’s family.
“Our family is devastated by this great loss, but we will continue to cherish the memories and time we spent together,” the statement said.

“Nathan was a God-fearing young man of strong character. He was thoughtful, kind, loving, caring, creative, admirable and driven.
“Although his time with us was short, he will live forever in our hearts.”
