Members of the Republican National Committee (RNC) introduced two draft resolutions on Saturday that would bar the committee from paying former President Trump’s costly legal fees and ensure neutrality in the Republican primary.
The resolution, shared by RNC member Henry Barber of Mississippi, was first reported in the following article: dispatchand comes amid speculation about Trump’s influence on the committee before 2024 nominees are officially selected.
Trump, the likely Republican nominee, recently named North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley and his daughter-in-law Lara Trump as co-chairs of the committee. Current chairwoman Ronna McDaniel signaled her intention to step down after Saturday’s South Carolina primary.
Lara Trump vowed earlier this month that she would use “every penny” of the RNC’s money to help elect Trump to the Oval Office.
“Every penny goes toward the RNC’s number one and only job: electing Donald J. Trump as President of the United States and saving our country,” she said.
If passed, Mr. Barbour’s proposal would block the use of funds to support Mr. Trump’s lawsuits, amounting to more than $500 million following the verdicts in his New York civil fraud trial and E. Jean Carroll defamation case. It turns out.
According to the newspaper, “The Republican National Committee and its leadership will remain neutral throughout the presidential primary and will refrain from ongoing presidential campaign activities until 1,215 delegates are reached and a candidate is clearly determined.” No additional staff will be hired,” the proposal reads in part. NBC News.
Another proposal, according to the news outlet, states: “Spending RNC resources on a candidate’s personal, business, or political legal expenses unrelated to the 2024 election cycle is prohibited by any RNC candidate, regardless of the 2024 election cycle. Failure to fulfill the RNC’s primary mission of helping elect 2024.”
The former president’s two political action committees have already spent more than $50 million in legal fees last year, according to Federal Election Commission records.
The proposal was not welcomed by the Trump campaign.
“The primary is over and it is the RNC’s sole responsibility to defeat Joe Biden and take back the White House,” said Chris Lacivita, a senior adviser to President Trump. Said. “Efforts to delay it will aid Joe Biden’s destruction of our country. Republicans cannot stand by and tolerate this.”
