Republicans have found a new way to appeal to voters of color: a rap music video featuring reality TV star Amber Rose.
The video, which was released earlier this month and screened at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Tuesday, features rapper Forgiato Blow singing along to the song “Ice, Ice Baby.”
“We’re voting for Donald Trump. America needs to be saved,” Blow raps in front of what appears to be a Tesla Cybertruck covered in pro-Trump posters.
“Black, white, brown people all voted for Trump,” Blow continues, as Rose, wearing a gold “Make America Great Again” chain, dances next to him.
The model, who only lip-synced in the video, spoke at the party’s convention on Monday and gave a strong endorsement of the former president.
“I realized that Donald Trump and his supporters don’t care if you’re black or white, gay or straight, it’s all about love,” Rose said. “And that’s when I realized: These are my people. This is where I belong.”
The video appears to be another attempt by the Trump campaign to reach out to voters of color ahead of the November election, where Trump hopes to draw support from black voters who many say Biden cannot win without them.
Yet while the video drew applause on the convention floor on Tuesday, it doesn’t appear to have resonated with some black Americans.
Former South Carolina Rep. Bakari Sellers (Democrat) X said in his video“This is what the Republican National Committee thinks about black voters.”
Former Florida Senate candidate Mike Harvey said Republicans should apologize for “that travesty.”
“Does being black mean hillbilly hip hop?” Harvey posted on X, adding that the Republican Party is “making memes” about the black experience.
Other social media users offered lighter comments, calling the video “embarrassing.” bandage one’s ear.
