Major Snail Heist in France
A surprising theft has taken place at a renowned snail farm in northern France, where thieves made off with about 1,000 pounds of escargot valued at over $100,000. This incident comes just in time for the holiday season, when this delicacy is particularly sought after.
In the early hours of November 24, the culprits gained access to the Escargot des Grands Crus in Bouzy by cutting through a fence. The farm, which sells to a Michelin-starred restaurant, is a popular tourist destination, according to the owners.
The thieves reportedly raided every shelf and freezer, taking not just the snails but also some petty cash. The owners expressed their shock on social media, stating, “Absolutely shocked. We are doing our best to replenish our inventory to ensure customer satisfaction for the holiday season.”
Farmers speculated that the perpetrators, likely knowledgeable about cooking, may have backgrounds in the food industry, and they planned the heist right before the winter celebration season.
Ines Daubergne, 20, whose family manages the farm, shared her thoughts, saying, “I think they were connoisseurs or professionals who knew they could steal a year’s worth of inventory at this time of year. It’s expensive, so it’s usually served at Christmas or big events.”
Escargot is typically consumed during winter holidays in both the United States and France and is often prepared with garlic butter and wine, making it a festive appetizer for Christmas and New Year’s gatherings.
The farm services high-end restaurants like Michelin-starred Le Parc and Les Clayeres in nearby Reims and is also a tourist attraction, offering escargot tastings and educational lessons on mollusk farming.
Mr. Dauvergne mentioned that authorities have yet to identify any suspects and that the family is facing significant financial losses.
The Daubergne family is part of a larger community of snail farmers in France, which consumes about 37 million pounds of snails each year. This theft follows a recent $100 million robbery of crown jewels from the Louvre, where six individuals were arrested during a bold break-in on October 19.
