A film about Tommy Lasorda’s legacy is reportedly in the works, with one of Hollywood’s greats potentially taking on the role of the iconic Los Angeles Dodgers manager.
According to Deadline, Robert De Niro is in discussions to portray Lasorda in the upcoming movie titled “Tommy & Me.”
While specific details about how the film will narrate Lasorda’s life remain unclear, the screenplay is being developed by George Gallo, Cambron Clark, and Reid Carolin. Skydance Sports is said to be involved in the production of this project, focusing on one of baseball’s legendary figures.
Lasorda, famous for his passionate demeanor and vibrant personality, is celebrated as one of the greatest managers in Dodgers history. He managed the team from 1973 until 1996, leading them to World Series victories in 1981 and 1988, and earning National League Manager of the Year honors in both 1983 and 1988.
The Dodgers retired his No. 2 jersey in 1997, the same year he was enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
After retiring from managing, Lasorda continued to influence the Dodgers as a key front-office member, serving in various vice-presidential roles from 1998 until 2021. His contributions included significant decisions, like scouting and signing Mike Piazza.
In January 2021, the Dodgers announced the passing of Lasorda, which occurred at a hospital near his Fullerton home.
Before becoming a manager and a front-office figure, Lasorda’s baseball journey started in 1954 when he played for the Dodgers, who were then situated in Brooklyn.
His playing career was relatively brief, as he played for two seasons with the Dodgers before being traded to the Kansas City Athletics in 1956.
Lasorda continued in the Minor Leagues for four more years and ultimately retired as a player after the 1960 season.
De Niro, recognized for his ability to embody passionate characters similar to Lasorda, has starred in many acclaimed films such as Taxi Driver, The Godfather Part II, and Goodfellas.
