Actor Robert De Niro is once again expressing his strong opposition to President Donald Trump, this time suggesting that the president and the Supreme Court are attempting to undermine Americans’ voting rights.
In a video for the activist group Hands Off Our Vote, De Niro voices concerns over efforts by the Trump administration to identify and eliminate fraud in U.S. elections.
In the video, De Niro emphatically declares, “no way” will he let Trump take away Americans’ voting rights.
“Voting is a constitutional right, but you have to recognize that this administration and the Supreme Court aren’t honoring our constitutional rights,” the actor from Goodfellas insists.
“Voting ought to be straightforward. You make your choice and cast your ballot. Simple, right?” he adds.
The actor then goes on to criticize Trump directly.
“For instance, if you want to elect leaders who support a would-be king that leads us into a disastrous war while profiting from it, you can certainly find them,” he states.
“Or if you prefer candidates who won’t slash your healthcare or protect pedophiles, there are solid options available too,” he argues, without providing any evidence to back his claims.
He continues by stressing the importance of voting to address what he describes as dire circumstances.
“You have the power to decide. That’s your right. That’s your superpower. But there’s a catch,” he said, adding, “Some influential people want to strip you of that power.”
“This is Robert De Niro, and I have a message for them: no way,” he emphatically states.
He also admits that he and the organization he represents are using legal challenges and protests to counter the will of the 77 million voters who supported Trump.
“We’re battling them in the courts and confronting them in the streets,” he claims in the video.
The group appears to have originated from last year’s “Hands Off” protests and is supported by various left-leaning organizations, including Greenpeace, the AFL-CIO, Planned Parenthood, and the Democratic Socialists of America, among others.
He concludes by urging, “If you’re as angry as I am about these individuals tampering with our votes, discover what more you can do.”
