Robert F Kennedy Jr Criticized for Swimming in Sewage-Contaminated Rock Creek with Grandchildren

On Sunday morning, U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. decided to take a swim with his grandson in Rock Creek, Washington. This choice raised eyebrows, considering the water’s known contamination with harmful bacteria. The area has a longstanding history of sewage runoff, and swimming has been banned there for over 50 years due to high levels of E. coli, fecal matter, and other pathogens.

Kennedy shared photos on social media of their time in the stream, including one of him fully submerged. Reports indicate that the DC Water and Sewer Authority estimates around 40 million gallons of untreated sewage and stormwater overflow into this tributary each year.

The swimming activity quickly ignited criticism online. One user noted, “With all respect, swimming in Rock Creek is prohibited. [poop emoji].” Another warned, “Enjoy E. coli.” A third user even suggested calling child protection services due to the situation.

The National Park Service has repeatedly warned against swimming in Rock Creek due to dangerous water conditions. Their advisories state that the bacteria and pathogens present in the water pose health risks to both humans and pets. The ban on swimming extends to all local waterways.

City officials are reportedly working on solutions to combat pollution, including building sewage tunnels to connect to Piney Branch and Rock Creek. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has a reputation for adventurous—sometimes reckless—outdoor pursuits, having engaged in risky activities during his youth, from hunting bushmeat to encountering tropical diseases in South America and Africa. He has even claimed to have had a parasite that affected his brain, among various wildlife encounters.
