Robert Stock’s season concluded on Wednesday after he was placed on the injured list, feeling a mix of disappointment but also relief, as his finger numbness didn’t seem too serious.
Earlier this year, the right-handed pitcher had surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome.
Stock mentioned that an MRI revealed poor circulation in his hand, and he has started medication to address the issue.
He was pulled from his scheduled start against the Orioles to avoid risking the bullpen if he wasn’t at his best on the mound.
In his place, the Mets recalled Xzavion Curry from Triple-A Syracuse to start the game.
Stock, who is 36 years old, wrapped up the season with a 5.93 ERA across eight appearances, including seven starts with the Mets.
“I think I’ve shown that my name deserves to be in the conversation about major league pitchers,” Stock stated before the Mets suffered a 7-1 defeat to the Orioles at Citi Field. “There are so many things I’d like to improve.”
Stock described his experience pitching for the Mets as a “dream come true.”
“It’s my dream to become an established major league starter and pitch for the next two decades in Major League Baseball,” he explained. “Achieving that demands an incredible amount of work and success, and this season was just a small step in a long journey.”
His confidence in his abilities seemed firm. “Despite the circulation issues, all the imaging we did on my arm looked great,” he shared. “I feel good overall. I’m throwing fast for someone with my delivery style, and I have no reason to believe that I’ll lose that anytime soon.”
Meanwhile, Daniel Duarte was also placed on the injured list due to a left hamstring strain.
Duarte had posted a 2.12 ERA in 24 appearances this season. The Mets turned to lefty Jefry Yan, recalling him from Triple-A Syracuse.
In other news, Carson Benge made headlines the previous night with a homer, joining Gregg Jefferies from 1989 as the only rookies in franchise history to achieve at least 40 extra-base hits and 20 stolen bases in a single season.
As the game progressed, Benge boasted impressive stats: he entered the night with 18 homers, 19 doubles, three triples, and 22 stolen bases.
