Roberts Puts Pause on Deadline for Trump Administration to Bring Back Mistakenly Deported Man

On Monday, Supreme Court Justice John Roberts has issued a temporary hold on the deadline for judges to return to the country under the Trump administration.

Roberts decided to extend the deadline until the High Court can address the emergency request aimed at entirely dismissing the Trump administration’s motion. The Supreme Court justice established a swift briefing schedule for the matter and instructed the plaintiffs to submit their responses by Tuesday afternoon.

Monday’s “administrative stay” does not resolve the fundamental issues of the case and does not imply how the court may ultimately rule.

The Trump administration has acknowledged “administrative mistakes” that led to the wrongful deportation of Kilmer Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran citizen residing in Maryland, even though an immigration judge had safeguarded him from being sent back to El Salvador due to potential violence threats.

Abrego Garcia was among numerous migrants expelled to the notorious Salvadoran prison last month. The administration linked him to MS-13 based on intelligence from confidential sources, yet Abrego Garcia’s family denied any gang affiliations.

The Justice Department has contended that Abrego Garcia is now in the custody of Salvadoran authorities and cannot be returned to the U.S.
