Robinson Cano joining Mexican League team, will face Yankees

Robinson Cano has a new team and will be playing against his old team as well.

The team posted about the news to X, adding a montage of highlights from his 17-year MLB career.

Cano, 41, will actually get a chance to play for his former Bronx Bombers on March 24 and 25, when the Yankees come to Mexico City for an exhibition series.

An eight-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger Award winner, he joined the Yankees and batted .309/.355/.504 in nine seasons in the Bronx, helping the team win the World Series. It reached its peak. 2009 title.

Cano left the Yankees before the 2014 season after signing a blockbuster 10-year contract with the Mariners, but ended up returning to New York and joining the Mets in time for the 2019 season midway through his contract.

The second baseman, who was suspended 80 games in 2018 for violating MLB’s performance-enhancing drug regulations, was traded to Seattle for then-top prospect Jared Kelenic, who traded him and closer Edwin Diaz to Seattle. It was part of a package to be released to Queens.

He primarily struggled with the Mets, posting a .765 OPS in 168 games, and was suspended for the entire 2021 season after testing positive for stanozolol.

Cano returned in 2022 and hit .195 in 12 games before being fired in May, but struggled to get going.

“Ultimately, we ended up with Roby because we weren’t looking to get into at-bats and wanted to allocate at-bats and utilize the entire bench,” said general manager Billy Eppler at the time. Ta. The Post’s Greg Joyce. “It seemed like things would turn out a little irregularly.”

He appeared in games for both the Padres and Braves until the end of that season, but was unable to find further success with either, at least until he was acquired from Atlanta in August.

However, Cano became part-owner of Baseball United, a professional baseball league based in Dubai, in September and was selected sixth overall in its first draft.
