Roblox faces lawsuit over sexual exploitation following attempted abduction of 5-year-old

A Mother’s Lawsuit Against Roblox Over Child Grooming Incident

A distressed mother is taking legal action against Roblox after her young son was groomed and nearly abducted by a man he encountered through the app. The lawsuit claims that the platform has turned into a haven for child predators.

According to the lawsuit filed in the Northern District of California, a 5-year-old boy, who frequently used Roblox, was allegedly approached in 2024 by a male predator pretending to be a child. The complaint describes how the predator employed established grooming techniques to gain the boy’s trust, eventually persuading him to disclose details about his school.

Things took a turn when the mother received a warning from another parent about a suspicious man following her son and some other children. This prompted her to intervene. When the boy later came home, he recounted the frightening encounter.

The complaint states the man approached the boy and his younger brother, claiming to be a friend of the boy’s Roblox character. When the boy asserted, “You’re not a child,” the man attempted to abduct him. Fortunately, a struggle ensued when the brothers resisted, leading to the predator fleeing upon seeing the police arrive. The boy’s frightened mother had called for help, eventually resulting in the man’s arrest.

Roblox, which has over 380 million monthly active users, offers an extensive platform for online gaming and interaction through customized avatars. However, the lawsuit alleges that it also provides a space for adults to impersonate children and engage in inappropriate activities, including the grooming of minors.

Moreover, the complaint highlights that the gaming service hosts numerous “Diddy” games, some of which are purported to emulate sexually explicit scenarios involving Sean Combs. An investigation by Kelkar Garcia, the legal group representing the family, claims there are more than 900 Roblox accounts featuring variations of convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s name, alongside games like “Escape to Epstein Island,” linked to his known abuses.

The mother and son are seeking unspecified damages for the emotional and physical trauma inflicted by the grooming experience. Their attorney, Sadie R. Antonmattei-Goitia, voiced serious concerns about the implications for children facing such online threats. She stated that the current regulations—or lack of them—allow for a dangerous environment where individuals with harmful intentions may thrive.

Roblox has not yet commented on the lawsuit. This isn’t the first time the platform has faced legal scrutiny; it has been involved in several lawsuits regarding allegations of child exploitation.

In a recent lawsuit from October, the state of Kentucky accused Roblox of enabling predators on its platform, exposing children to disturbing content. Similarly, a mother from North Carolina sued the company in August, alleging it allowed her young daughter to be exploited through a widely used children’s app.
