A robot took a tumble, and it really hit home how even machines can get distracted.
This incident happened during the second World Humanoid Robot Games held in Beijing, China, from August 22 to 26, where over 2,000 artificial competitors from 16 nations showcased their skills in sports and practical tasks.
However, not all of them displayed impressive humanoid prowess during the so-called rob-lympics.
In a funny video that has racked up 1.3 million views on X, five robotic figures attempted a cheerleading routine while dressed in colorful wigs and outfits, waving pom-poms.
As the clip pans out, a silver robot can be seen climbing a podium in the foreground. Midway up, it turns its head, perhaps out of curiosity.
This moment of distraction leads to a mishap; the sophisticated robot ended up tripping on the stairs, falling headfirst in a manner reminiscent of a classic comedy scene.
Commenters on X were quick to respond to the robot’s blunder.
One user joked, “Don’t let a pretty face distract you at work — whether you’re carbon-based or not.”
Another observation highlighted the simplicity of men, saying, “It’s now proven that us men are very simple creatures.”
Yet another commenter quipped, “Bro lost focus.”
One social media user humorously referenced Philip K. Dick’s work with, “Do Androids Dream of Electric Boobs?”
But this wasn’t the only clumsy moment at the Games; there were several other instances that suggested we might not need to worry about machines dominating us just yet.
Another robot, trying to lift a 35-pound barbell, had its own disastrous moment as it dropped the weight and fell over into the judges’ table.
Amid these entertaining flaws, there were also remarkable displays of robotic athleticism. For example, a robot named Lightning sprinted the 100 meters in an astonishing 9.32 seconds, breaking Usain Bolt’s previous record of 9.58 seconds set back in 2009.
During this impressive run, the robot reached a speed of 14.5 meters per second, which is nearly 32 mph.
