The Democratic mayor of Rochester, New York, faces backlash after him It was criticized Police responded to a call assisting Border Patrol patrols during a traffic stop on Monday.

“Officers on the scene have verbally instructed residents to leave the vehicle, which is contrary to our policy,” the mayor said.
“Another very concerned about this is that RPD officials were out of sight of the supervisors who were on the scene to begin contact with vehicle residents while the border patrol was holding back,” Smith actually added. [Border Patrol] You need to start contacts and make sure they are safe. ”
Evans said police will receive more instructions on the Sanctuary City Order.
“Our policies are transparent. City police officers will not help or participate in federal immigration activities,” he added.
The Locust Club, the Rochester Police Union, has issued a statement defending its officers.
“The RPD did not initiate this traffic stop and had no information about the residents. The agents asked the officers to help residents leave the vehicle.
“The officers handcuffed residents for the safety of the officers, handcuffed them without incident and placed the HSI agent on the scene,” the statement continued. “On-site officers did not ask residents about the immigration status or related documents. No force was used.”
The union accused the mayor of overreacting the incident, saying that the officials involved had nothing wrong.
City Council President Miguel Melendez proposed that policies are needed to oppose racism against Latino people.
“The reality is that there's more profiling. There's more light to being Latino in this country right now,” he said. “That being said, we have policies. It is the council's responsibility to ensure that we follow these policies.”

The city first adopted the “sanctuary city” policy in 1986 and reaffirmed these policies 21 years later.
