Tragic Rockfall in Cappadocia Claims Lives

At least three individuals lost their lives in Cappadocia, a well-known tourist spot in central Turkey, when a rockfall incident occurred on Thursday, officials stated.

The rockfall happened around 3:15 p.m. local time, following heavy rains that affected the area. It originated from one of the region’s unique geological formations known as “fairy chimneys,” according to reports.

These “fairy chimneys” are tall and narrow rock structures that often have a cone shape, and their name reflects local folklore.

Fragments of rock from the fairy chimney fell onto people near the Goreme Open-Air Museum, as confirmed by the governor of Nevsehir, Huseyin Kok, during a press briefing.

According to The Associated Press, three people died and five others sustained injuries due to the incident.

Kok expressed his hope that no additional casualties would be reported, adding, “We are deeply saddened.” Two of those who died were Turkish nationals, though further details regarding the third victim remain undisclosed.

It remains unclear whether those who were killed or injured were tourists, employees, or bystanders.

Rescue teams are currently conducting searches through the rubble, as efforts continue in the aftermath of the rockfall.

Cappadocia, which lies southeast of Ankara, is recognized for its striking fairy chimneys, cave dwellings, and ancient rock-cut churches. This tragic event follows a series of accidents involving tourists in various popular destinations recently.

Earlier in October, a Brazilian tourist tragically died after being struck by a roofing material during a visit to a historic Arizona landmark. Additionally, a 36-year-old American tourist fell to her death while hiking in Italy’s Dolomites.
