The Pittsburgh Pirates had a memorable weekend series against the Colorado Rockies.
Losing a 12-run game on Saturday hurt bad enough, but making the huge blunder of allowing the other team to steal home plate was just like rubbing salt in the wound.
The Rockies were already leading by four in the fifth inning, but the Pirates were caught off guard when Colorado infielder Ryan McMahon ran all the way to home plate.

McMahon was standing on third base when Pirates pitcher Jared Jones threw the ball to the opposing batter, and after the umpire called a ball, Pittsburgh catcher Yasmani Grandal threw the ball back to Jones.

But Grandal’s pitches were pretty indifferent.
“Yasmani Grandal lollipoped the ball back and Ryan McMahon, with his high baseball IQ, saw it,” the game announcer said.

McMahon took advantage of a momentary lapse in the Pirates’ defense and easily stole home plate, and by the time Jones noticed McMahon jogging home, there was no time to throw the ball back to Grandal for the catcher to attempt a touch.

Jones was visibly frustrated and ended up walking a batter, after which Pirates manager Derek Shelton came out of the dugout to remove Jones from the game.
Colorado won handily, 16-4.
