During a recent game, Colorado Rockies rookie center fielder Cole Carrigg sparked controversy after he flipped off fans from the Atlanta Braves while his team was losing 2-1 at Truist Park. This incident occurred as the Rockies were trying to maintain a 1-0 lead when Carrigg attempted to catch a fly ball hit by Michael Harris II but ended up missing it, which resulted in a two-run double for Atlanta, turning the tides in their favor.
As the Braves fans heckled him, Carrigg’s frustration got the best of him, leading to the inappropriate gesture. Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer responded to the situation by publicly denouncing Carrigg’s actions and announcing that he would not play in the starting lineup for a few days. Schaeffer noted, “Cole made a mistake, and he knows that is an embarrassment to the organization and that we don’t stand for that. Everyone makes mistakes; however, this is something he needs to learn from. We just won’t tolerate that behavior here.”
Even though Carrigg was benched for the next game, he did come into the series finale as a pinch hitter but had a tough outing, going 0-for-2 with a strikeout. He later played in the field. Following the game, Carrigg took accountability for his moment of poor judgment.
He expressed regret, saying, “First, I apologize to my teammates and the organization; that’s not how I want to represent us. That’s inexcusable on my part. I’m someone who plays at 110 percent every game and gives my all to this team to try to win. There are moments that count, and that was one of them, so I’m very passionate about that.” He did acknowledge the rabid enthusiasm of Braves fans, adding, “Kudos to them. But that gesture can’t happen.”
Indeed, flipping off fans typically results in consequences, and while Carrigg may have made a mistake, at least it’s clear he genuinely cares about the game. Hopefully, this will serve as a lesson for him moving forward.
