Joe Rogan Claims Former Presidents Contacted Spotify Over Covid-19 Debates
On Tuesday, podcaster Joe Rogan suggested that two former presidents took part in protests regarding the skepticism surrounding Covid-19 discussions. This statement comes in the wake of Spotify facing criticism over allowing Rogan to air what some termed misinformation about the pandemic.
Musician Neil Young famously removed his music from Spotify in 2022, expressing a desire not to share the platform with Rogan. He publicly stated his disapproval of Rogan’s approach to the Covid-19 narrative.
In a recent podcast episode, Rogan mentioned, “And suddenly, Neil Young heard that I wanted to be removed from Spotify.” He further stated, “Spotify received calls from two former presidents.”
The controversy drew attention from Jen Psaki, who was the White House Press Secretary at the time. She responded to Spotify’s decision to label a Covid-19 related podcast, emphasizing the need for all platforms to combat misinformation while promoting accurate data.
She noted, “Our hope is that all major tech platforms, and all major news sources, are responsible for ensuring that Americans have access to accurate information about things that matter, such as Covid-19.” However, Rogan remarked that despite the backlash, he gained two million subscribers in a month.
Reflecting on his audience’s reactions, Rogan said, “People started listening. And they said, ‘Yeah, he’s really rational and pretty humble, he’s just asking questions.’” He also criticized the media’s treatment of Ivermectin, citing how it was labeled as merely a horse dewormer.
Rogan recounted, “I was like, ‘Why aren’t you focused on the fact that a 55-year-old man is doing well in the worst tensions?’” He described how he recovered swiftly during the Delta variant surge.
Regarding former media practices, he commented, “It’s so dirty. It’s a very dirty business.” He admitted to once holding great respect for journalists, stating, “If I’d never done this podcast, I would just spit out all the company lines.” Rogan reflected with a laugh, “I never thought the world was filled with demons, money-hungry demons who are willing to sacrifice human lives in pursuit of income.”
Rogan’s statements illustrate the complexities surrounding public discourse on Covid-19 and how opinions can diverge dramatically, revealing the tension between established media narratives and alternative views.
Spotify’s CEO Daniel Ek addressed the backlash during a revenue call in early 2022, emphasizing the importance of not altering policies based on individual creators or media trends. He stated the company’s guidelines are well-considered, with insight from various internal and external experts.
As this conversation unfolds, it highlights ongoing debates in media and public health, leaving many wondering about the balance between regulation and free expression.
