Rogers addresses abortion amid Slotkin attacks: ‘Michigan voters have already decided’

First appearance on FOXFormer Rep. Mike Rogers, a Republican candidate for the Senate in Michigan, is taking a clear stance in a new campaign ad, addressing an issue that will likely be top of mind for many voters in November.

“I know that making decisions about pregnancy is one of the most difficult and personal decisions a woman can make,” Rogers says in the new ad, sitting next to his wife, Christy Rogers, who holds his hand.

“The voters of Michigan have already made their decision on this issue and I respect that decision,” he explained, referring to the 2022 election in which Michigan voters chose to enact Proposition 3, an abortion rights amendment that would enshrine “the fundamental right of reproductive freedom” into law.

The amendment also protected the right to contraception and sterilization.

“I won't do anything in the Senate to change that,” Trump promised in a 15-second digital campaign ad.

A source familiar with the matter told Fox News Digital that the ad is intended to counter misinformation allegedly spread by the campaign of Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) about Rogers' positions.

The source added that the government would continue to address the issue, using election funds if necessary.

The video was released on the same day that Slotkin ran two abortion-related ads attacking Rogers as part of a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign airing across broadcast, cable and digital platforms.

One ad criticizes Rogers for his support for abortion restrictions in 1994. But Rogers has pushed back against the suggestion that these cases would shape his actions in the Senate, and did so again in a video on Wednesday. Indeed, since launching his Senate campaign last year, Rogers has consistently pledged to uphold Michigan's abortion laws and not support any federal legislation that contradicts them. He also supports former President Trump's position that abortion should be left to the states.

In Michigan, a July Fox News poll ranked abortion as the third most important issue for voters. The biggest issue cited by most voters was the economy, at 35%, followed by immigration at 17% and abortion at 16%.

A CNN poll released this month showed Ms. Slotkin leading Mr. Rogers, 47% to 41%. A poll of the election commissioned by AARP last month showed Ms. Slotkin tied with Mr. Rogers among primary voters over 50, at 46% each. Ms. Slotkin has a slight lead among all voters, 47% to 44%.

He is the top handicapper in politics. Cook Political Reportcalled the Michigan Senate race a “50-50 contest,” despite a long history of Democratic dominance.
