Florida’s Republican Governor, Ron DeSantis, believes that the potential victory of Democratic socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani in New York City’s upcoming mayoral race could lead to a spike in property values in Palm Beach. Mamdani, an immigrant from Uganda and associated with the American Democratic Socialists, recently won the Democratic nomination for mayor, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo. His win has sparked varied reactions, with some Republicans and Democrats anticipating a significant shift in New York City under his administration.
DeSantis commented on the situation, expressing surprise at how expensive Palm Beach real estate could become if Mamdani is elected. He noted that many residents might leave New York City, driving property values up in Palm Beach. Just before Mamdani’s primary win, DeSantis warned, “If this socialist candidate takes office, people will flee, and Palm Beach property values will soar.”
DeSantis described Mamdani as “as bad as de Blasio,” criticizing his stance on public safety and calling his ideas on policing impractical. “If he wants to abolish the NYPD,” DeSantis remarked, “it’s not over for them.” He suggested that recruitment bonuses for police might need to increase if Mamdani wins.
Mamdani’s campaign promotes freezing rent for over two million New Yorkers in rent-stabilized apartments and establishing a Community Safety Bureau that would enhance outreach and funding for violence prevention programs. He also supports raising the minimum wage in the city to $30 an hour by 2030.
In light of Mamdani’s primary victory, Republicans are using the situation to label Democrats as extreme. Former President Trump remarked on Mamdani’s nomination, calling him a “100% communist madman” and claiming that Democrats have crossed a line by endorsing him.
Mamdani has ambitious plans for taxation as well, aiming to raise the corporate tax rate and implement an additional tax on high earners to generate funds for various city programs.
Responses to his platform have been mixed, but it’s clear that his win has intensified political dialogues between parties about the future of New York City.
