Ron DeSantis shows how to bring the teachers’ unions to heel

The left wants schools to replace parents and provide children with everything but a decent education. So schools are getting more funding to teach kids about gay porn and invented pronouns while providing every meal for kids, even during the summer.

Believe it or not, this cancer is prevalent to varying degrees in nearly every red state, except for one where governors are left with no choice but to indoctrinate and transform their children. denied access to funds and power.

DeSantis seeks to perpetuate freedom, not dependence, in Florida.

This is something every Republican has promised for years but never delivered. At a time when most red states have struggled to eradicate union influence even from local school districts, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced that the state's largest teachers' union, one of the largest in the nation, will United Teachers of Dade is on the verge of having its accreditation revoked.

In May, DeSantis signed SB 256, requiring all public employee unions to receive 60% support from their members or face a decertification vote. The law also allowed members to opt out of the automatic deduction of dues from their paychecks. As a result, enough members decided to keep their money and as a result, UTD's dues decreased to her 58.4% of the membership.

After repeated failed attempts in court to block the law, UTD leadership worked hard throughout the fall to restore the 60% standard. They offered $100 gift cards to members who enrolled additional dues-paying teachers and sent staff to strengthen the enrollment campaign. It also removed substitute teachers from bargaining units to reduce the number of teachers needed to meet standards.

Eventually, enough teachers decided to vote with their brains and their wallets and keep their funds out of the hands of greedy union rivals, and the pooled funds were transferred from Dade County. New local associations could even be established to prevent spillover. Those salaries, by the way, have grown even larger because DeSantis has cut taxes and raised teacher salaries while reducing union control over teachers' fates.

The Miami-Dade Education Coalition was born thanks to the provisions of SB 256 that lowered the standards for new voter certification for the Emerging Substitute Teachers Association. This alternative would forever jeopardize United Teachers of Dade's ability to survive long term.

Under the new law, existing unions will be required to demonstrate a 30% interest threshold at union formation in order to vote on recognition. However, if they gather 30% of signatures, they can submit the results to the state Public Employee Relations Commission, and with a 51% vote in favor, the union can reorganize. However, unions will still face a 60% threshold to maintain certification each year.

This law cleverly allows new competitors to appear on the ballot with the signatures of just 10% of the population (instead of 30% for existing unions), increasing their chances of survival. Ultimately, the upstart organization could siphon off some of the remaining support for the status quo union, thereby dropping it below the 50% threshold for survival.

While some may complain that this law is unfair, SB 256 is a great example of how to overturn the current power.

When the government empowers private fraudsters to take over entire professions and children's education, the only way to rebuild choice and competition is through generations of pro-union treatment. The goal is to balance this with provisions such as a 10% standard for new unions. . This reflects the DeSantis administration's cunning in using power to achieve conservative ends in the same way the left has acted in blue states and even red states for decades. is shown again.

Florida is also denying $248 million in eligible funding from the Department of Agriculture for the summer EBT program, which provides food to children participating in school lunch programs.

This is how the government owns us. By making as many people as possible dependent on them for every need under the sun. The federal government owns the red states by making them dependent on the flow of money and then attaching so many strings to it that the states can't help but become California-lite.

DeSantis is having none of that. The Florida Department of Children and Family Services has rejected new funding for school meals. The state had until Jan. 1 to sign up for the additional funding, but an unhelpful Republican Congress approved it in the December budget.

Mallory McManus, a spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Children and Families, told the Orlando Sentinel that “the state's full commitment to services for children is essential in the absence of additional federal programs, which inherently always involve some kind of federal condition.” We expect our approach to continue to be successful this year.”

Mr. DeSantis clearly understands that dependence on federal funds is what causes red states to behave like blue states. Most Republican governors rely on federal funding and wonder why they have problems with blue states. The Summer EBT program began as an “emergency” program during the coronavirus pandemic. But like all such “temporary” expenditures, it became permanent.

DeSantis seeks to perpetuate freedom, not dependence, in Florida.

Regardless of who is elected as the presidential candidate, we should all strive to transform red states into sanctuaries for our values. No one has offered a better blueprint for freeing red states from the vicious tentacles of both federal donors and union leaders than DeSantis.
